Noah Leavitt: John Ashcroft's subpoena blitz, FindLaw, February 20, 2004
"Over the past two weeks, the Justice Department has issued two intensely controversial sets of subpoenas. The first targeted peaceful demonstrators in Iowa. The second targeted medical caregivers in Illinois, New York, Pennsylvania and Michigan. None of the targets of these subpoenas is alleged to have anything to do with terrorism. . . . The Ashcroft Justice Department has had its eye on peaceful demonstrators and dissenters for quite some time. In May 2002, for instance, the Attorney General announced the elimination of twenty-six-year-old regulations that had prevented the FBI from monitoring "open to the public" events held by domestic religious, political and civic organizations unless it had specific cause for doing so. . . . The New York, Chicago, Philadelphia and Michigan Medical Subpoenas were directed to at least six major hospitals in New York City, Chicago, Philadelphia, and Ann Arbor. They demanded that the hospitals turn over hundreds of medical records -- relating to what may be dozens of patients who underwent certain types of abortions performed in these facilities over the past three years. Plainly, these subpoenas sought private, sensitive medical information. They also attempted to second-guess doctors' judgment, and intrude into the confidential relationship between doctor and patient." (2/24)

Failing upwards

..it isn't just Bush himself - his whole adminstration defines a culture of "failing upwards,"
in which the competent sensible people get canned and the crazies get promoted.[1]

Ashcroft lost an election to a deceased person, then gets a big appointment.
Abraham, Secretry of Energy, lost an election, then got appointed.
Many members of the cabinet confesssed to lying to congress about the
Iran-Cotra affair, after gettng caught stealing millions of dolars
woth of TOW missiles. Other cabinet members have worked for Enron.

Furthermore:

Why did NORAD fail on 9/11 and why was the head of NORAD promoted
instead of court-martialed?

General Ralph Eberhart, who was in charge of air defense on 9-11,
now runs the new "Northern Command," the domestic unified military command
established in October 2002. [2]

"the person ultimately in charge of air security that day is AF Gen. Myers.
Three days after 9.11 he was promoted to Joint Chief of Staff." [3]

SENATOR BILL NELSON: ... General Myers, ...You said earlier in your testimony that
we had not scrambled any military aircraft until after the Pentagon was hit. And so,
my question would be: why?

GENERAL MYERS: I think I had that right, that it was not until then. I'd have to go
back and review the exact timelines.

SENATOR BILL NELSON: ... If we knew that there was a general threat on terrorist activity,
which we did, and we suddenly have two trade towers in New York being obviously hit by
terrorist activity, of commercial airliners taken off course from Boston to Los Angeles,
then what happened to the response of the defense establishment once we saw the diversion
of the aircraft ...?
That's the question.

SENATOR BILL NELSON: ...

GENERAL MYERS: You bet. I spoke, after the second tower was hit, I spoke to the commander
of NORAD, General Eberhart. And at that point, I think the decision was at that point
to start launching aircraft...

In this case, if my memory serves me -- and I'll have to get back to you for the record --
my memory says that we had launched on the one that eventually crashed in Pennsylvania.
I mean, we had gotten somebody close to it, as I recall. I'll have to check that out.

SENATOR BILL NELSON: ...

So that was 40 minutes between the second tower being hit and the Pentagon crash.
And it is an hour and seven minutes until the crash occurred in Pennsylvania.

GENERAL MYERS: I can answer that. At the time of the first impact on the World Trade Center,
we stood up our crisis action team. That was done immediately.

So we stood it up. And we started talking to the federal agencies. The time I do not know
is when NORAD responded with fighter aircraft. I don't know that time.

General Ralph Eberhart, who was in charge of air defense on 9-11,

In October 2002 Eberhart became head of the new Northern Command,
responsible for homeland defense—the first time since America’s founding
that the command of all military personnel in North America has been centralized
under a single officer.

On 8:40 a.m on September 11,2001, the FAA notified (NORAD) that flight #11
has been hijacked. Three minutes later it notified NORAD that flight #175
was also hijacked. By 9:02 a.m., both planes had crashed in the world trade center
and NORAD knew airliners were being hijacked and converted into bombers.
Yet, despite all its sophisticated detection capability and
"seamless command and control capability," as General Arnold described it,
it was unable to intercept two other airliners headed for command and control centers
in the Washington area, at 9:38 a.m— 58 minutes after its initial warning about flight 11—
flight #77 hit the Pentagon; at 10: 06 a.m— one hour and 26 minutes after its initial warning—
Flight 93 crashes near Shanksville, Pennsylvania.

George W. Bush: I never said Iraq HAS WMD!

From www.whoslying.org Thursday, 16 October 2003

George W. Bush

Backgound

Bush sits down for a series of interviews with regional television outlets to rebut criticism about his handling of the lead up and aftermath of the Iraq War.

Statement/Action

"Let's get the words right. I said Saddam had [emphasis ours] weapons of mass destruction and he used them. Which he did. And second I said he was a gathering threat. And that's an important distinction. ..."

"Bush Rejects Criticism over Iraq Policy", AP News, Oct. 13, 2003

Reasonable Inference

Bush never claimed Iraq had Weapons of Mass Destruction at the time of invasion.

Contrary Evidence

It is up to Iraq to show exactly where it is hiding its banned weapons, [emphasis ours] lay those weapons out for the world to see, and destroy them as directed. Nothing like this has happened.

[SNIP]

The dictator of Iraq is not disarming.

[SNIP]

Year after year, Saddam Hussein has gone to elaborate lengths, spent enormous sums, taken great risks to build and keep [emphasis ours] weapons of mass destruction.

[SNIP]

Before September the 11th, many in the world believed that Saddam Hussein could be contained. But chemical agents, lethal viruses and shadowy terrorist networks are not easily contained. [emphasis ours] Imagine those 19 hijackers with other weapons and other plans -- this time armed by Saddam Hussein.

[SNIP]

Let there be no misunderstanding: If Saddam Hussein does not fully disarm, for the safety of our people and for the peace of the world, we will lead a coalition to disarm him. [emphasis ours]

[SNIP]

State of the Union, January 28, 2003

"Intelligence gathered by this and other governments leaves no doubt that the Iraq regime continues to possess and conceal some of the most lethal weapons ever devised."

President George W. Bush address to the nation, March 17, 2003
